Review:
Let me start off by saying this has to be the best Transformers game I have ever played. No other Transformer game has came even close to this game, it has it all a great story, amazing gameplay, stunning visuals, campaign last you more than 2 hours unlike the other transformer games and multiplayer is just as great. Best of all and what read scores big point for me is the visuals of the main characters and their original voices (well most of them) all take me back to my childhood watching the cartoon from the 80’s we all know and love, there’s nothing like playing as and hearing Soundwave during the campaign to really give you flash backs to when we first saw him in the 80’s series.
The campaign is well…..The War For Cybertron so you obliviously know what’s it’s about, The plot of Transformers: War for Cybertron is set long before the events of the Transformers: Prime television series, It begins with the Decepticon campaign, though players can choose to begin with the Autobot campaign and return to the Decepticon campaign later. I recommend to start with the Decepticons the story will flow a bit better.
When people ask me about Transformers: War for Cybertron’s gameplay the best way I can describe it is, it’s like playing Gears of War. The game runs on the Unreal Engine you have almost the same feel while playing with is huge since as we all know how great Gears is. Transforming between the bot form and vehicle form plays a huge role in the game not only to get around but how you play the game in multiplayer I noticed a lot of players using the leader class to use its vehicle form the entire match just to ram others, which is pretty effective you can easily score a double or triple kill when timed right, I’ve also seen a lot of jets chosen to fly up high on the maps to snipe.
The game’s visuals are not ground breaking but are damn good from every main character details to the surrounding robotic environment. Omega Supreme and Trypticon look awesome, though the art design for the game isn’t exactly what we remembered from the classic series, it does comes damn close even to go far as improve some character’s looks (Megatron).
War for Cybertron has several multiplayer modes to choose from. “Escalation” is a mode for exclusive pre-order characters and characters unlocked during the campaign. Non-stop waves of robots attack until the player(s) are defeated, similar to Gears of War “Horde” mode and Call of Duty: World at War “Nazi Zombies”. Players are also able to spend points earned from defeated enemies on health, ammo, new weapons and unlocking new areas in the map. Of course there’s Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch in Team players are divided into Autobot and Decepticon. Conquest is a capture-and-hold style game, similar to the conquest mode found in the Star Wars Battlefront series. In “Countdown to Extinction” players must take an active bomb and place it at an enemy base, similar to the Assault mode in the Halo series. “Power Struggle” is the game’s equivalent to the common King of the Hill game type. Finally Code of Power is a mode consisting of two and a half minute rounds where teams vie for a giant melee weapon.
Competitive multiplayer games do not allow use of the main characters from Transformers. Players must create their own Transformer based on the class they wish to play which determines their vehicle form. They may then choose a specific look for that form, and customize the color scheme, weaponry and abilities they take into battle. Classes include a “Leader” class, a “Soldier” class, a “Scientist” class, and a “Scout” class, each with unique abilities, vehicular transformation, and weapon loadouts. Scouts are cars, Leaders are trucks, Scientists are jets and Soldiers are tanks. The multiplayer aspect also features a experience and leveling up system, including perks, and upgrades.
The only thing I can complain about multiplayer is party/group size, the few times I had a large group with me, exceeding over 5 people including myself the lobby would inform me that my party/group was “too large” which was kinda lame being that several over games let you hit double digits party size.
In conclusion Transformers: War for Cybertron is a great game weather you’re a fan of Transformers or not it has everything you can ask for in a game a great campaign, co-op, gameplay and multiplayer. If you haven’t picked up this game yet it’s a must buy Transformers: War for Cybertron is available now for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, DS
I give Transformers: War for Cybertron a 9.5 out of 10 a must buy.
