Los Angeles Times confirmed, Shannon Eastin will start Thursday night’s preseason game between the Chargers and Packers. She will be the first on-field female referee in NFL history. This isn’t Eastin’s first time as referee she previously worked Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games, and in 2009 was the first woman to officiate a Florida A&M game. Obviously, she is not garanteed a placement in the league; she’s grouped with the other replacements, the NFLRA considers them “sub-standard”
However this is a big step and can open a lot of jobs for women in the sports industry. If she can do her job without faults, there is no reason why she can’t hang with the boys — and possibly upstage a couple, as well.
I would love to hear your opinions on this, please comment.
