[LoL] Underrated items, and why you really use some of them

league-of-legends-logo-transparent-i19 Throughout the years of League of Legends, players can typically be seen building items straight out of a pattern they set up in their head. They can buy items. However, circumstances change between games, and with it, your item builds should too. To be able to adapt and change your item build to best fit the situation, that is TRUE item building. Most players, even in Diamond, haven’t mastered this concept yet. In this article I’ll be going over the underrated items that should be considered in your build, or in some cases, you have already considered them but buy at the wrong point in the game.

Doran’s Shield : Cost 440

+100 health
+10 health regen per 5 seconds

Unique: Blocks 8 damage from champion basic attacks.

This item is ridiculously good early game, especially in passive matchups. It gives you great dueling potential with the extra health and block damage, and gives you a solid amount of HP regen. A health potion gives 50 health per 5 seconds, so this item is like a mini-health potion in lane. The cost also allows you to get an extra health potion in lane, so you can (usually) have a safe early game. Usually bought by melee laners vs ranged, or particular melee vs melee matchups. Examples: Kassadin, Zed, Shen, Malphite, Riven

Hexdrinker : Cost 1350

+25 attack damage
+25 magic resistance

Unique - Lifeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs 250 magic damage for 5 seconds (90 second cooldown).

This item is EXTREMELY strong on AD casters, especially in mid or against AP tops. A 250 damage shield is absolutely massive, and in conjunction with your Doran shield that you probably bought, you’ll be absolutely hard to kill while dishing out massive damage. Providing a decent amount of damaging stats and resistances at the same time, it could be the difference between you dying and losing the lane or you killing the enemy mid and snowballing out of control. Examples: Zed, Kha’Zix, Riven, Darius, Renekton.

Void Staff: Cost 2295

+70 ability power

Unique: +35% Magic penetration

(Magic damage ignores 35% of the target’s Magic Resist . Applies before flat magic penetration)

Void staff is often overlooked as an midgame item in a lot of caster builds, although most people opt to get it late game. Most people feel that Rabadons is always the better midgame choice. However, there are some key things I want to point out here: Void Staff costs 2295, whereas Rabadons costs 3300. Less cost, right, but wouldn’t you lose out on damage? Well, that depends. Upon testing the damage output mathematically, Void Staff actually outdamages Rabadons on targets with roughly over 80 magic resistance. So if there are multiple targets on the enemy team with over 80 MR, Void Staff will outdamage Rabadons and save you 1000 gold for something else. Examples: TF, Malzahar, Fizz, Lissandra, Rumble

Crystalline Flask: Cost 345

Unique: Starts with 3 charges and refills each time you stop by your shop.

Consumes a charge to restore 120 health and 60 mana over 12 seconds.

Stuck in a difficult lane? Do you just want to farm and live through early game? This item is your cream of the crop. Saves you money on extra potions and keeps you in lane FOREVER. With it’s low cost of 345g, you can even purchase EXTRA potions to supplement your already high sustain, making you effectively unkillable unless you die to a gank. However, by buying this item you are making a commitment to simply farm, as this item has no offensive stats. You don’t want to go aggressive and try for kills, unless the enemy laner is just getting outplayed that hard/unable to cope against your sustain. This item is an amazing starting choice and I recommend it for passive players. Examples: Anyone in solo lanes!

That’s all of the item theory for now, but there’s so much more you can discover on your own. Happy theorycrafting!
