Secret Avenger #1 “Calling out the Continuity”

There are missions so secret that no can no they ever took place, not even the operatives. The world’s greatest assassins and spy’s have been gathered for one purpose, to be S.H.I.E.L.D’s phantom limb. To be an arm of S.H.I.E.L.D that performs the sole duty of black ops missions. Among these operatives are Hawkeye, The Black Widow, and Nick Fury. Implanted with a new nano-tech that can wipe their minds at any moment and redact any and all missions that fall within the parameters this trio set out to write the wrongs of the world, and forget all about it.

I really must say that this was one of the most entertaining comics I have ever read. There is a talent for comedy that Nick Spencer possesses that is seldom seen in to comics today. I loved the way he had Hawkeye call out the continuity issue that have plagued Marvel for a while. Such as Nick Fury’s ethnic change and comparing it to James Bond was absolutely amazing. I can’t remember that last time I laughed that hard in a comic. The story line in this issue was incredible, taking a nonlinear approach worked well with retracing the memory wipes. Parts of this issue felt like the movie “Memento”, at time playing in reverse to retrace the redacted memories. Over all the writing was solid, action packed, and funny. This issue is everything a comic should be.Secret-Avengers-1-01d

The darker aesthetic of the illustrations was a nice touch. After all the narrative dictates a top secret black ops mission. I have always felt that the art sets the tone for the whole issue and Luke Ross nailed it. His dark gritty illustrations brought forth a world that was so secret you wanted to read the issue in a whisper. The say the eyes are the window to the soul and in comic books that rings truer than life. This is where Ross really shines. I found myself drawn the each characters eyes as if I were seeking some hidden deception. Alas the deception I found was as deep and intricate as artist Luke Ross’ Talent.

This was another stellar title in the Marvel Now series. D.C Comics could take a thing or two from the quality of comics Marvel is producing. Secret Avengers is one of their most well rounded titles thus far. The team of Nick Spencer and Luke Ross is dynamic and entertaining. I look forward to this pair’s next issue with great interest. Secret Avengers #1 receives a 9.5 out of 10. Don’t tell anyone it’s this good.
