Valve Launches Steam Trading Cards

Valve is introducing the Steam Trading Cards, a beta system that lets you earn rewards while you play Steam games. Similar to Xbox Achievements/PS3 Trophies, the Trading Cards system will add to your “Steam Level”, a system-wide XP bar of sorts, but Valve is also giving users the chance to earn rewards through collecting achievements.

Once you’ve collected all the necessary cards for a certain game, you’ll be able to craft a Game Badge, which gets you rewards such as profile backgrounds, emoticons, and the chance to earn coupons for game discounts and DLC.

Starting now, players of Don’t Starve, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Half-Life 2 will start earning trading cards, with the service expanding to more titles in the coming months.
